Todd Systems European Military CQC/MSD Disparate to Non-Military Self-Defence

The Todd Group has a lineage of no other current European military CQC/MSD training provider. You will not find any other military close combat training provider with instructor qualifications and lineage achieved directly from the three following World War II pioneer Master Instructors, SMG Harry Baldock, PSG Charles Nelson, and Col Rex Applegate.

Col Applegate was the Todd Group source of skills knowledge of his Applegate Kill or Get Killed Special Operations Forces package as well as providing a primary insight into the military close combat skills of Fairbairn and Sykes.

Michael Brandt who completed his basic and instructor Army hand-to-hand combat courses under Dermot Pat O’Neill during World War II at Fort Bragg personally passed on practical knowledge of O’Neill’s skills to Tank.

Former US Army the late Michael Brandt

Charles Nelson was trained by Biddle and learned Dermot Pat O’Neill’s skills from one of O’Neill’s assistant instructors Sgt Patrick Kelly a former instructor to the Shanghai Municipal Police.

Shocker Shaw was a SAS CQB instructor trained in the Fairbairn system by Brigadier Calvert who received his instructor training directly from Fairbairn.

The following are New Zealand’s leading military qualified unarmed combat and military self-defence instructors in the last 100 years, Harry Baldock, Shocker Shaw, Jimmy Page and Tank Todd.

WO1 Jimmy Page

Geoff “Tank” Todd, the Todd Group Master-Chief Instructor, has worked in military CQC/MSD with numbers of former exponents trained by the late Shocker Shaw attaining knowledge of Shockers military CQC/MSD skills.

The Todd Group has a 91-year history as European military CQC/MSD tradecraft specialists.

While many styles and systems look to overseas for knowledge and training the Todd Group is a leading global European mil CQC training provider that exports such training.

The Todd Group Chief Instructor Geoff “Tank” Todd holds a unique status as a civilian being instructor qualified by Baldock, Nelson and Applegate and also several of the next generation of allied Military Master Instructors.

Geoff “Tank” Todd

He has military CQC/MSD Master instructor qualifications from the military of two other allied countries and has been instructing military CQC/MSD for over 35 years with 25 of that being to Special Operations Forces.

Tank was invited to undertake military instructor and Master-Instructor qualifications because of his working life’s commitment to military CQC/MSD including being the Chief instructor of the oldest private European military CQC/MSD training facility globally, the Todd Group formerly the Baldock Institute established 1927.

Tank 1990 pre-instructor qualification course familiarisation first meeting with Special Forces Chief Hand to Hand Combat Master-Instructor Lawrence Jordan

Tank’s military combative Master-Instructor qualifications have not been achieved by any other civilian and his lineage is of no other military or civilian instructor.

He is also the only living civilian or military per to be instructor qualified by Baldock and Applegate and be approved to continue with their trade craft work.

The programs of Baldock, Applegate and Nelson were of similar origins and were the same or very similar in tactics and individual skills.

After World War II, it was believed that there would not be another Great War and as such there would be no need for such brutally ruthless military combative skills ever again. There was an unwritten rule that most instructors followed in regards to not providing their full military deadly military close combat skills training packages to civilians.

The Baldock Institute as part of physical culture, provided training in wrestling, boxing and self-defence styled jiu-jitsu completely separately from military unarmed combat and self-defence.

Baldock Institute early wrestling and Jiu Jitsu training

Much of the population had little knowledge of the methods of CQC employed in the great wars and many may well think that European military CQC no longer exists such has been the restricted nature suppressed profile and access to such training.

Most of the tactics and skills of these pioneer experts have stood the test of time because they were the best and most proven means of enemy destruction threat neutralisation by the most terminal means then, and still are now.

They were based on the military science of human anatomy destruction by lethal armed and unarmed means and methods.

The simple combat boot, helmet and body armour provide safety as well as capabilities to wound, cripple, maim, or kill an enemy being primary battlefield kit.

The soldiers trusty dagger will silently and quickly put an end to highly trained foe’s fighting arts prowess.

If it had not been for the late Harry Baldock eventually agreeing to train Tank in his World War II military unarmed combat and military self-defence packages so he could pursue a career as a military CQC/MSD instructor, a lot of the tradecraft practices would have been lost forever.

Harry Baldock was a stickler for detail and committed in the pursuit of excellence. He was very clear that a hands-on history of military training and qualification attainment with a proven lineage from leaders in the field of military unarmed combat and military self-defence is indicative of a depth of tradecraft knowledge, and is what leading instructors must be made of. He trained Tank in how to develop MUC (military unarmed combat) tactics skills and formulate training and management packages, as well as instructing him in threat and situational objective achievement problem solving. These trade craft skills are most import for military CQC/MSD Master -Instructors.

The Baldock Institute provided not only CQC/MSD training in WWII but also battle fitness and CPP close personal protection training for soldiers undertaking protection of the brass in wartime as well as protecting dignitaries.

Harry also trained police in defensive tactics and physical fitness training and testing.

Tank is an international qualified police defensive tactics instructor as well as a specialist close personal protection training instructor. He provides CPP training for diplomatic CPP roles, Royal families CPP details, and to corporates as well as international mega sports and the specialist security industry.

The Todd Group are primarily military CQC and MSD specialists in European military armed and unarmed combat and military self-defence, with an uncompromising commitment to providing CQC/MSD training to the armed forces that takes priority over other training provision as soldiers’ life’s depend upon being armed in the most current proven combative capabilities.

The Todd Group, formerly the Baldock Institute are the oldest private specialist NZ training providers of close personal protection.

CQC History and Evolution

European military armed and unarmed combat has an ancient history in military combative skills development training and battlefield employments dating back over 6000 years to the ancient Greeks, Romans and Celts.

Ancient European warfare battlefield tactics and skills were not only proven on the battlefield, but also tested in gladiatorial contests in ancient colosseums. The oldest combat sports were derived from ancient European military battlefield close combat.

The ancient military combative evolution of tactics skills and training methods was passed on from military course to course by military chief instructors. Some of the foundation principles and best of battle proven tactics and skills are still inclusive in the Todd Systems current European CQC training today, simply because they are still the best and safest means of threat neutralisation. Some have been made obsolete, made dormant, or modified to meet the most current objective achievement considerations and requirements if they are still the best and safest means of military battlefield threat neutralisation.

Trench warfare in the great wars required the most lethal military methods to take the enemy out by deadly foul means, completely disparate to civilian fighting arts self-defence.

There was no place for anything but the best of battle proven rapid dispatching of the enemy.

World War II changed the modus operandi and mind-set of military close quarters combat and military self-defence by considerable with advances in warfare and in firearms.

The establishment of Special Operations Forces outfits like the SOE, OSS, and SAS changed both military armed and unarmed combat and military self-defence with the need for covert overkill methods of silent killing to fit with the nature of roles and operational requirements.

WWII OSS/SOE CQC Weapons

The modus operandi was simple winning by covert dirty and deadly silent killing, primarily by armed means, but if compromised and unarmed by controlled aggressive overkill enemy take-out foul and deadly means.

Hit and run silent killing was essential, as well as less lethal enemy incapacitation skills for specific roles such as prisoner snatching and detainee handling.

The skills were developed by military close combat Master-Chief instructors with input and assistance when required from experts of their times in related fields of expertise including military scientist’s and medical doctors.

Todd Systems European military CQC is a military trade craft based on the military science of human anatomy destruction.

Mil CQC Eye spiking

Ruthless unarmed and non-ballistic weapons skills were developed to enable the defeating of enemies highly trained and skilled in the fighting arts of their country and allies.

Exotic covert close quarters combat weapons were designed and made to provide the best chance of taking out one’s enemy, regardless of how fighting formidable and highly trained they were. The military Masters of Mayhem reasoning was simple in that armed combat deadly options take the fight out of a fighter rapidly.

Automatic submachine guns, semi-automatic pistols, and deadly non-ballistic CQC weapons changed CQB/CQC forever.

Some of the leading instructors of WWII had high level knowledge in Eastern fighting arts which was advantageous in developing tactics and skills to defeat enemies trained in such styles. The modus operandi of taking the enemy out was by overkill, controlled, aggressive dirty and deadly battle proven means and methods.

Todd Systems military CQC skills like our military processors are role and objective achievement specific, primary military tradecraft means and methods of threat neutralisation.

Military Masters of Mayhem of European military CQB/CQC/MSD tradecrafts in WWI and WWII developed modern battlefield primary military trade craft armed and unarmed combat tactics and skills specifically for military operational roles, including urban operators military self-defence and battlefield armed and unarmed combat. Close combat tactics and skills changed considerably with the advent of WWII for Special Operations CQB/CQC roles.

WWII instructors were selected because of their combative physical and mental makeups, previous military unarmed combat training achievements, as well as being identified through their boxing and wrestling backgrounds and knowledge of enemy fighting arts. Instructors had to be military close combat highly qualified specialists with respected instructing records of service. Some were drafted in for their military self-defence and military unarmed combat expert instructor capabilities, including knowledge on how to defeat enemy fighting arts styles, and others were selected as they were unarmed combat savvy tough nuts, renowned for their close combat expertise in previous campaigns.

Todd Military CQC/MSD Ethos and Tradecraft Modus Operandi

Todd Group HQ are the caretakers of the doctrine and training packages of the oldest private European military CQC/MSD training organisation with the longest history of our kind in our Mil CQC/MSD tradecraft. The Todd Group have a committed responsibility to provide our combatants with the best means of threat neutralisation.

The Todd Group has an uncompromising commitment to CQC excellence for the soldiers we train that is not just a job or hobby, it is deadly serious.

Todd Systems military close quarters combat and military self-defence are not sports or civilian fighting arts derived. Our military CQB/CQC/MSD skills are of a very different modus operandi and for very different objectives and outcomes.

Military self-defence and close quarters combat must provide the best chances of defeating a formidable enemy in real life actions on, where it is kill or die and where your aggressor may well be armed, highly trained, of considerably greater physical attributes, and capabilities, goal driven, armed and committed to causing you grievous bodily harm.

The Todd Group HQ as the current caretaker of our military CQC/MSD doctrine, develop our military skills and training packages in the same manner of our former military combative master instructor predecessors in regards to mil CQC/MSD tradecraft practices.

Todd Group military Senior through Master instructor personnel are trained in problem solving and tactics and skills development, as they always have been in our tradecraft of European military close combat.

Military CQC must stay at the forefront of enemy close combat threats neutralisation and the Todd Group maintain this progressive ethos by constant progressive evaluation of our primary tradecraft packages.

Training soldiers for kill or die battlefield close quarters combat actions on encounters is the brutal reality of our military CQB/CQC/MSD tradecraft delivery. Skills must provide the best chance of fast threat neutralisation by means of immediate threat destruction or enemy incapacitation followed by threat neutralisation. To achieve this is by employment of CQC/MSD skill at arms options of threat neutralisation.

Unarmed combat skills must be human anatomy destructive skills to destroy life-support systems, or if this is not immediately possible, disarm, disable the enemy of escape or combative capabilities, followed by disposing of the threat. The mind-set must be to take advantage of enemy wounding by maintaining threat neutralisation momentum.

Combine this objective achievement requirement with considerations like full battledress, body armour, boots, packs, weapons, fatigue, wounds, injuries, difficult terrain, and other considerations and only the best of battle proven CQC tactics and skills of human destruction must be instructed.

In the tradecraft of mil CQC/MSD and at the Todd Group proponents and instructors earn respect by volunteering for training testing and achieving military rank through commitment inner resolve and combative competency.

Skills to command with packs and webbing

Combatants are drilled in the mind-set of never underestimating an enemy, and always presuming the enemy is armed, highly trained, combative and physically capable and committed to taking them out.

Todd Group specialist programs include threat commensurate low to high level threat neutralisation options to fit with rules of engagement laws of the land of self-defence and operators roles and objective achievement requirements.

MOF: Mil CQC/MSD qualified instructors all must have achieved their qualifications on military courses and have courses reports/certification proof of courses completed and rank achieved. Using military titles and terminology does not equate to military CQC or military CQC instructor rank and status.

MOF: Individuals that have to falsely claim or mislead by using mil CQC/MSD titles they are not qualified to use are deceptive and are regarded in mil CQC as having a lack of integrity. They lack in self-respect by not having the intestinal fortitude to join up and volunteer for training and testing.

MOF: History didn’t always get it right and to utilise techniques that were developed for very different purposes on the battlefield is life endangering.

MOF: Stationary blocking of penetrative weapons and dropping down to escape the full nelson hold endangering your spinal cord integrity are two such examples of unnecessary self-endangerment as a result of history not getting it right or not being progressive in skills assessments and making such techniques obsolete.

MOF: There are wide ranging fighting arts techniques that are not safe or effective in an actions on encounter against a formidable, potentially armed military enemy combatant.

MOF: High kicks in full battledress on difficult terrain when load bearing would never be a consideration for military CQC, along with a lot of other traditional fighting styles techniques that are risk increasing in full battle kit.

TCP: Same principle skills to neutralise entire threat categories minimise decision making under threat where the higher the threat level equates to the lesser the response time and reduced skill levels.

TCP: The highest kick in Todd Systems European military CQC/MSD are stamp kicks on or below the knee joint that are delivered at close to point blank body contact ranges.

TCP: Military CQC stamp kicks primary trade craft objectives are to destroy the integrity of the knee joint/knee cap ligaments. They are destructive stamp-kick employments right through the limb to the ground, and are not retracted post stamp kicking as forward committed actions on momentum must be maintained under unarmed offensive assault until the enemy is no longer.

MOF: A downed enemy should never be neutralised from standing bent over punching as you are bringing yourself into ground kicking range.

TCP: Todd Systems military ground neutralisation is by means of the combat boot.

MOF: Sweeping, reaping and grappling are all high risk actions in military CQC as they offer the enemy time, opportunity and access to concealed weapons, as well as targeting your human anatomy life-support systems targets.

MOF: There are no submission techniques instructed in Todd Systems military ground combat as they involve increased duration threat neutralisation, and are static battlefield techniques that are easily combated by foul and deadly armed and unarmed mil methods and means.

TCP: All point-blank bodily contact range actions on including battlefield takedowns must provide immediate threat neutralisation or incapacitation followed by threat neutralisation.

TCP: The environment and terrain in military CQC can provide improvised weapon threat neutralisation capabilities in enemy rapid decentralisation down onto hard terrain surfaces/protrusions as well as in ground combat.

TCP: Never remain static on the confrontation line under an enemy armed with an edged weapon incoming assault, as any trained formidable enemy combatant utilising multiple thrusts can easily sever your arms tendons/arteries and or penetrate your major internal life-support organs.

MOF: Razor sharp daggers only have to penetrate the human body to cause fatal wounds.

MOF: Ancient European military daggers used at close quarters, included penetrating chainmail body armour such was and still is the deadly capabilities of the dagger in military close quarters combat in the hand of a trained combatant.

TCP: Never underestimate a dagger as it is always loaded and requires minimal force to produce fatal outcomes.

MOF: Never turn your back on your enemy to attempt to throw them as you expose the nape of your neck/spinal cord to basic military close combat human life support destruction skills, and lose vision of your enemy reducing combative capability.

Mil CQC/MSD Trade Craft Weapons Training Equipment and Training Innovations

Following in the footsteps of his former instructors Tank has been actively involved with design and manufacture of military CQC specific equipment, as well as designing military combat daggers and defensive tactics batons.

His designs are custom developed for the role duties and most importantly with the operator always in mind.

The TSB45 is one such innovative tool and is the only dual hand grip expandable rotational baton of its kind.

Todd Group designed and developed tradecraft tools

The Todd black, grey, and green role daggers along with the dispatchet are modern military custom purpose designed trade craft tools manufactured in the UK.

Tank is the current caretaker and developer of the CQC/MSD doctrine and training packages as well as being responsible for publishing and producing training resources for the military and Todd Group exponents proponents and instructors.

The Todd Group have developed wide ranging training equipment to provide the most realistic military combative training experiences.

Todd Group inventions have attracted overseas investors and training partners.

The Todd Group, being the caretaker of the doctrine has protected some of the most important training regimes of European military CQC/MSD tradecraft practices such as military CQC drill skills to command so exponents can learn skills by name and execution arming them with CQC knowledge.

Military CQC drill skills to command

Much of the terminology and drill commands had been lost but now because of the Todd Group has been re-established in the military.

No other combative training provider instructs these CQC skills to command drills packages for CQC skills and mental toughness enhancement.

Todd Group Operational Model

The Todd Group set and maintain the highest military trade craft standards and are professional, responsible training providers that do not make public Phase 2, advanced or Phase 3 Specialist CQC/MSD packages. Our civilian enthusiasts training is conducted similar to our military training provision. This is a must in regards to mil CQC tradecraft protocols.

To achieve rank and advancement candidates must complete mandatory training hours, volunteer for testing and pass testing phases. There is no other way to have access to Phase 2 and Phase 3 training other than by earning the right and being accepted for such training which is a must for setting and maintaining the highest standards.

Todd Systems testing phases prove candidate’s mental toughness skills competency and must be challenging.

Phase one testing

Releasing such primary trade craft practices in the public domain would be irresponsible and disrespectful to those that have earned the right by testing to achieve promotion and advancement.

Todd Systems Commensurate threat neutralisation

Todd Systems of European military CQC/MSD/DT provide threat commensurate threat neutralisation methods for military CQC and civilian self-protection as well as law enforcement defensive tactics and close personal protection CQB/CQC/MSD.

Rules of engagement and laws of self-defence as well as roles demand threat level commensurate means and methods of threat neutralisation.

Military CQC/MSD provides primary secondary and emergency methods of threat neutralisation.

Todd Systems European military CQC/MSD Disparate to Non-Military Self- Defence

The Todd Group, formerly the Baldock Institute, are committed caretakers of our European military CQC/MSD tradecrafts.

The Todd Group has established departments and divisions including our Med Cell headed by Dr Steffan Eriksson, our training team with over 50 HQ and International Instructors and an in-house innovation and development division operated by Tank and his 2IC Cowboy Mitchell.

The Todd Group is operated out of our HQ facility and head office as well as Camp Todd.

The International Close Combat Instructors association is an allied organisation of military Close Combat Instructors which was established by Col Rex Applegate, SMG Lawrence Jordan, and Tank Todd. This organisation is to recognise military CQC/MSD qualified instructor’s long-term commitment and records of instructing service. Col Applegate was responsible for the naming the International Close Combat Instructors Association. He used the military term close combat so as to cover both military armed and unarmed combat.

The International Close Combat Instructors Association membership roll includes some of the most respected allied military CQB/CQC/MSD instructors past and present.

Todd Group 90th anniversary guest of Honour WO2 Ken “Blue” Curran, former Commando and military unarmed combat Chief Instructor (far right) (centre) Major John Whipp former officer commanding Australian Army unarmed combat and guest of honour piper Johnny McIntyre.

The reasoning for the association establishment was because there was no other allied organisation specifically for military trained and qualified CQC/MSD instructors with long term commitment to the CQC mil tradecraft.

Col Rex Applegate was the patriarch and Tank and Lawrence Jordan are the two directors of the association. Members must be nominated and meet the military instructor stringent joining requirements.

This unique organisation provides connections between past and present allied military close combat instructors and enables cross fertilisation of tactics and skills.
