Plate 45

Leg Trip with Ankle Dive: If you fail to bring your man down with the arm hold and leg trip (Plate No. 43) you will often find that his right ankle is within reach of your left hand. Release his right wrist and dive for his right ankle with your left hand as shown in Plate No 45.  When you grasp his ankle pull it toward you from under him and send him sitting in front of you.  All this must be done quickly. If it is possible while you are falling retain the hold on his left arm so that after the fall he cannot turn on his knees. The pin hold following the fall will depend entirely on how and where you land on top of him, but it is necessary to secure it quickly before he has the chance to turn.

Plates 46 and 47

Arm Hold and Leg Trip Developed into Grapevine: It is possible after failing to bring your man down as shown in Plate No. 43 to hook your right foot around the shin of his left leg and down him by falling suddenly on your left side in front of his right foot and at the same time shooting your own left foot in the air behind you, which is to his left, as shown in Plate No. 46. It should be, noted that owing to the impossibility of posing in this position the photograph does not show exactly the correct positions. The hand of the defender should not be on the mat, and when the, body of the attacker reaches the mat, should be slightly nearer the camera. When falling, twist vigorously so that when you both stop turning you will be in the position shown in Plate No. 47.

On reaching this position relinquish your grapevine hold with the right foot and, turning on top of him claim the hold shown in Plate No. 13 or Plate No.14. Turning under your opponent with the gravevine hold illustrated above is not advisable for amateurs when flying falls count, as you will have to roll over your own shoulders.

Plate 48

Arm Hold and Cross Buttock: From the referee hold your opponent’s left arm and hold it well in your right armpit. Claim his right wrist with your left hand. Then with your left foot on the mat and with the toes twisted as far out as possible, move your right hip right through the front of your opponent. In executing this throw do not think of the action of moving your right foot.  Concentrate on getting the hip through and the foot will automatically come into the correct position. With the correct buttock your body must be horizontal and squarely in front of your man. Getting your body under him, lift him as shown in Plate No. 48 and make him fall to your right. Coming down, bend your right knee and do not lose the hold on his arm. You will probably land in the position shown in Plate No. 44. This throw suits you best when you are much taller than your opponent.
