In February 2005, the world’s greatest Grandmaster of Wing Chun Kung Fu visited New Zealand for the first time.

Grandmaster Chu Shong Tin needs no introduction to students of Wing Chun. For those unfamiliar with Wing Chun Lineage, Grandmaster Chu was a student of Yip Man (the legendary instructor of Bruce Lee).

Many years ago Yip Man submitted an article to the local newspaper in Hong Kong. In the article he described how one of his students had superseded his own abilities in Kung Fu. Grandmaster Chu was the subject of that article.

Grandmaster Chu with Leigh Jenkins

Grandmaster Chu travelled around New Zealand enjoying the many sights and then conducted a seminar in Christchurch for the students of NZ Wing Chun. The founder and principal instructor of NZ Wing Chun Kung Fu, Sifu Leigh Jenkins, hosted the Grandmaster’s visit.

Sifu Leigh has been traveling to Hong Kong and training under the guidance of Grandmaster Chu Shong Tin and Grandmaster Yip Ching for 10 years. Over that time he has been teaching Wing Chun in Christchurch, Auckland and Timaru to a few selected students. However, since the seminar he has adapted a new view to teaching the art as Grandmaster Chu encouraged him to share this unique Martial Art with the wider community in New Zealand.

Master Chu Seminar

“New Zealand has some very accomplished and humble Wing Chun practitioners that have been diligently practicing Grandmaster Chu’s teachings for many years.  I would like to take this opportunity to introduce:

  • Instructor Hugh Puttock – Christchurch
  • Instructor Phil Aberhart – Timaru
  • Instructor Phillip Chan – Te Atatu, Auckland

These men have all visited and trained with Grandmaster Chu in Hong Kong. The knowledge is here and we have now opened the doors to welcome a new generation of Wing Chun practitioners in New Zealand”.
