Karl Webber is well known for training top line MMA fighters in New Zealand. What a lot of fight fans may not know is that Karl has a long history with the Todd Group in military CQC and MSD training.

Ron Evans and I first trained Karl in CQC back in the early 90s in Papakura.

Karl completed a week-long intensive course and successfully passed phase 1 testing at Todd Group HQ in 1996.

We’ve had a long association not only through CQC but also with combat sports.

Karl contacted me recently to establish CQC/MSD training at his Canterbury fight centre.

I spoke with Eddie Yee, our Canterbury Todd Group Chief Instructor, and then Karl and we decided to conduct a weekend short course of training to establish Todd Systems tradecraft practices at Karl’s Canterbury fight centre.

So, September 16 and 17 saw 10 Todd Group HQ phase 1 through 3 proponents and instructors travel to Christchurch to conduct and partake in an excellent two days of training.

The only three Master Instructors of European military CQC/MSD in New Zealand were all in attendance in the capacity as instructors and as training proponents.

What makes the Todd Group unique is that our systems are current military instructed systems and we are the oldest private specialist training providers of European military CQC/MSD in the world and the only such instructors in New Zealand.

The Todd Group Instructing team are instructors to the military as well as civilians.

Some of our intensive exported courses are combined civilians and military personnel courses which is a unique occurrence in the trade craft of military CQC/MSD.

More than 30 keen and willing enthusiasts attended these two days of training.

The Todd Group course joining process from application through to being accepted for course joining and meeting the course joining requirements is the first part of the identification of those that are committed and willing.

Those that apply are accepted and fail to complete the course joining requirements are binned and will not be accepted for future training.

The reason for this is simple, military CQC/MSD for civilians is a privilege not a right and applicants must be responsible committed individuals with the required attitude and attributes.

Attendees had the benefits of being trained by the Todd Group HQ most highly ranked instructors as well as respected Todd Group depot instructors

The Todd Systems of military self-defence and military close quarters combat are living packages because of the need to stay at the forefront of neutralising enemy fighting arts.

Conducting short intensive courses such as in Christchurch is an excellent way to not only recruit and train new exponent’s but also to ensure Todd Group former and current exponents and instructors alike remain current in our most primary proven tradecraft practices.

This short course begun with an introduction to what European military CQC/MSD is including an introduction to the Todd Systems brain to boot mental toughness and psychological enhancement package for military self-defence and close quarters combat.

This was followed by unarmed offensive assault and unarmed counter offensive assault primary options training.

These primary options included tradecraft strategies to enable quick threat neutralisation.

Minimum contingency options were instructed to enforce immediate threat neutralisation and to fit with the time restraints of a two-day short course.

Attendees came from wide ranging backgrounds including military and law enforcement and a large contingent of combat sports fighters and serious CQC enthusiasts.

More and more practitioners of sport fighting and traditional fighting arts self-defence styles are attending Todd Group courses every year by referral or by for reading CQC times online.

Even though most of these attendees are skilled fighters already, it is the skills to neutralise extreme criminal violence that brings them on course.

These people are practical realists that know their capabilities and are well aware of the threat that criminal violence presents to everyone.

Knowing that the Todd Systems of European military self-defence and European military close quarters combat have a 90-year history and are currently instructed to the military is a major factor in their deciding to undertake our CQC/MSD training.

There are many martial arts and fighting arts styles of self-defence, but the Todd Group is the only training provider of our military elite European CQC/MSD systems with direct instructor qualifications from several of the World War II leading military instructors and next generation of military combative Master Instructors.

Eddie and Karl will work closely to recruit serious enthusiasts of CQC/MSD in Christchurch with full support from Todd Group HQ.
