"Nugget" was a top wrestler in the days when the smaller boys got their chance, and put on outstanding all-action professional contests. He could wrestle, was an outstanding athlete, and often took to the air with a flying dropkick to stun an opponent.
The May Road boys at Mt Roskill later moved to the Auckland Y.M.C.A. where Ernie Pinches gave them the chance to prove themselves. They drew big crowds, and Ernie then started to bring boys in from overseas. The smaller boys did all the holds of the big pro-stars and were often twice as quick.
Many of these boys would have been stars in Europe where the smaller boys were normal. The English crowds liked skill and ability and I know "Nugget" fitted into this category.
Nugget saw action with "Wild" Don Scott, Chic Nicol, Dave Hieatt, Barry Keene, Brian Coyle, and "Jumping" Joe Andrews, among many others.
His sons Ken and Steve were both New Zealand champion amateur wrestlers and among the best New Zealand ever produced.
Today Ken is a respected boxing trainer and TV commentator at the big fights and is doing an excellent job.
