New Zealand Olympic Committee recommends Taekwondo New Zealand as the national sports organisation for Taekwondo in New Zealand – 26th October 2005
At the most recent meeting of the New Zealand Olympic Committee Board, two applications for recognition as the national sports organisation for Taekwondo in New Zealand were considered. One was from Taekwondo New Zealand (TNZ) whose application was accompanied by the minutes of the recently held TNZ Annual General Meeting – a meeting independently chaired by Mr Roger Wood of the Government’s Sport & Recreation NZ (SPARC) and which John Kotsifas, Secretary General of the Oceania Taekwondo Union also attended as an observer.
The second application was from the NZ Taekwondo Federation (NZTF) refuting information conveyed to the NZOC by TNZ, and urging NZOC to recognise the original unification steering committee, and promoting the credentials of it’s President Grand Master Lee.
After due consideration the NZOC Board put forward two recommendations to the World Taekwondo Federation. First to recommend to the WTF, that Taekwondo New Zealand becomes the officially recognised national sports organisation by the WTF for Taekwondo in New Zealand. Secondly, that at this point, the NZOC relinquishes the interim Governorship of the sport in this country, and hands back the decision-making authority to either the WTF, or its nominated representative organisation in New Zealand.
As such, and with the support of SPARC, and the Oceania Taekwondo Union, the NZOC has made these recommendations as their last act of management as the interim Governors of the sport in NZ. The NZOC also stressed to the WTF that the submitted strategic plan of Taekwondo New Zealand, illustrated openness and transparency of process, and an inclusive forward plan which the NZOC believes will see the sport move forward in our country.
