J.K.A.N.Z.'s Ron Fraser, head of the BUFFALO KARATE CLUB in Browns Bay on the shore recently lost his eldest son, Stephen, who died suddenly, 39. As a remembrance of him Ron has made a trophy, which is called, The 'Fritz' (Stephens nick name in the navy).
Each year this trophy will to be presented to a student that may not necessarily the best but tries their heart out, a very important factor in karate.
This year the Fritz was to be presented by the honourable Mark Burton at their national championships in Taupo. Unfortunately these were cancelled, but Ron was lucky enough to have the Mayor of North Shore, George Wood, to come to his dojo and present the trophy to one of his students.
We put on a small demonstration for the mayor, which included him being punched by his youngest student 7-year old Kate Goddard, which the mayor was extremely amused about.
The Mayor presented the trophy to Ron Randall who has been training with Ron Fraser for nearly four years. The evening ended with a little get together and light refreshment supplied by the families.
