Top New Zealand heavyweight prospect, Shane Cameron was forced to go the distance for the first time in his professional career when he outpointed tough Hiriwa Te Rangi over eight rounds at the Fielding Civic Centre on July 23.
Apart from the third round when he landed a terrific right uppercut that visibly shook Te Rangi, Shane never looked like stopping the durable South Islander, although winning every round.
Te Rangi has done everything from cage fighting to karate and even boxed as a kid. He challenged Cameron to a rematch immediately after the fight stating that he had come in as a last minute replacement when Aussie John Wyborn was forced to withdraw with a cut eye. Given more time to train the big Maori boxer fancies his chances against Cameron.
Shane was cut during a head clash in the sixth round but it wasn't serious and didn't cause the ex-shearer any distress.
Many top Aussie boxers including Ken Brady, Bruce Farthing, Clive Stewart and Brian Bennett fought in Fielding, a hotbed of boxing in the fifties and sixties, so the organisers were pleased when a crowd of 800 turned up to see the program. The undercard featured a first rate amateur tournament.
