Former Australian heavyweight champion, Big Bob Mirovic, stole the show on the undercard of the Shane Cameron-Shane Wijohn NZ heavyweight title promotion at Auckland's Sky City Casino on Saturday, December 4.
The Aussie used his height and reach advantage superbly to knock out K-1 fighter, Hiriwa Te Rangi, in the third round. Bob also tossed in the occasional right-hander and some good left-right-left hook combinations. The right cross-left hook combo (followed by an overhand right on top of the head for good measure) that dropped Hiriwa for the full count was classic stuff. Te Rangi was on the canvas for several minutes. Remembering that Te Rangi went eight hard rounds with Shane Cameron last October, this was a good performance from Mirovic.
In the main event, Shane Cameron demolished Maori boxer, Shane Wijohn, in the fourth round to win the undisputed vacant New Zealand heavyweight title. The crown had been vacant since Kipa Tasefa's retirement in 2002. Apart from a head clash in the third round which opened a gash on Cameron's forehead it was one-way traffic, with Cameron ending the fight by knocking out Wijohn with a vicious flurry to the head midway thought the fourth stanza.
Shane Cameron's sparring partner, Chauncey Welliver, a part-Sioux from Snowqualine, Washington, USA, also proved popular with the big crowd. The 128kg Yank punched opponent Richard Tutaki around the ring for six rounds with a non-stop flow of lightning punches followed by verbal outbursts.
Welliver claims to have acted as a sparring partner for Mike Tyson, David Tua and Hasim Rahman.
In the opening middleweight four-rounder, Prince Hamid continually drilled a straight right through the defences of Fili Mailata to take a unanimous points decision.
