2009 National Wrestling and Grappling Championships.

Chris Storrie, Mark Grayling and the Mount Maunganui wrestling club did a fine job hosting the 2009 championships. Conducted at the Mount Maunganui Sports Centre commencing with the first weigh in on Thursday, August 20 it was apparent that this was going to be a first-class national championships.

Being the first year the new code of submission grappling was going to be conducted along with freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling at the nationals meant an expanded program and the duration of competition would be dictated by the number of entrants. Entries were high but through the hosts planning and having a good venue and being well resourced the Nationals was conducted inside the timeframe and in a professional manner.

The two competition mats were kept busy with freestyle wrestling and grappling all day Friday and Greco-Roman wrestling on Friday night. Saturday continued with a high standard of wrestling and grappling and many finals were contested. The wrestling and grappling codes were very compatible and complemented each other. Having both codes contested simultaneously provided interesting competition for spectators and all those in attendance.

There were some excellent individual efforts in all codes and age groups that were very much appreciated and applauded by the large crowd in attendance. The officials and board members and especially the hosts put in some long hard hours and the espresso coffee van in attendance along with the well supplied canteen was much appreciated.

The reality was very apparent in regards to future nationals in regards to the expansion of the nationals with the inclusion of submission grappling. The interest in submission grappling and the growth in this new code will require future hosts to ensure facilities and the national duration cater to the projected increase the entries. The newly introduced protest rules although only employed several times during the nationals did work well and ensure correct results and outcomes.

For the board members in attendance it was just time for a board meeting immediately post the final presentation before heading for the Nationals official dinner and special awards.

The special awards presentation conducted at the Mount Maunganui surf club was, as the entire Nationals, conducted in an efficient manner.
