The 3rd Annual Cacoy Doce Pares World Federation 2006 World Titles were held in Cebu, Philippines from 24th November to 26th November. Athletes representing teams from six countries participated in the event to include players from the USA, Poland, England, Australia, the Philippines, and for the first time Indonesia. Participants had the opportunity to compete in Kata competition, single and double stick sparring and the Master Edgar Canete Kulata (no body armor) challenge. Sparring divisions included Juniors, Women’s Lightweight and Middleweight divisions, and Men’s Lightweight, Middleweight, Super Middleweight and Heavyweight divisions including Senior divisions.
There were countless examples of fantastic sportsmanship, skill, and expertise in this spectacular event. The Atmosphere was electric as the Cebu Coliseum resounded to the sounds of full contact competition with fighters being urged on by their supporters. What was especially pleasing was the recognition by all of a good fighter regardless of the team that athlete represented. Teams from all over the world competed in a spirit that was so encouraging that it made all the hard work by the team members, their support personnel and families worth the effort. In some cases teams traveled from as far as Europe, the USA, and Australia. Event favorites, Australia did very well fielding some excellent athletes to include long time competitors such as Vince Palumbo, Craig Hayward, Maris Lukasevics, Vlad Mihal, and Andrea Wheatley. Outstanding fighters included Scott Dent, Peter Karidis, while fighters new to competition including Storm Dickensons and Angela Wood did very well to place in the medal tally.
Newcomers to the competition, the Indonesian team, did extremely well in their debut championship performance. The team consisting primarily of novice fighters to the sport had trained very hard since their first seminar with 8th Dan black belt and multiple world champion Vince Palumbo who traveled to Jakarta in July at the request of 6th Dan Glen Gardiner. After Vince’s visit the team trained aggressively building fitness, endurance and fighting skills which were noticeable throughout the event. The Indonesian team were very competitive fighters with an in-your-face style. Several of the Filipino athletes commented that this style of fighting was difficult as it forced the opponent to always fight defensively and therefore not control the ring.
The event provided an opportunity for some very spectacular fighting from the participants. The Filipino contingent was marvelous to watch demonstrating awesome speed and dexterity. The double stick division was a blur of movement. With the Filipino’s winning Gold, in the Men’s Lightweight division, Ariel Great, Middleweight division, Emilio Cuevas and Heavyweight division, John John Mac.
