New Zealand Attends 17th World Taekwondo Federation General Assembly, April 2005

Matt Ransom TUNZ President

TUNZ President Matt Ransom attended the 17th World Taekwondo Federation's General Assembly during the World Championships in Madrid, Spain during April as an official representative for New Zealand under the auspices of the Unification Steering Committee, which is endorsed by the New Zealand Olympic Committee.

Matt is also the Secretary General for the Unification Steering Committee and participated in the WTF General Assembly along with NZTF President Lee Jung Nam. The Unification Steering Committee was formed in January this year to oversee the bringing together of all WTF style Taekwondo groups in New Zealand under one umbrella and reports directly to the New Zealand Olympic Committee which is the official interim governing body for WTF Taekwondo in New Zealand.

The General Assembly was a historic occasion to attend, as the two New Zealand representatives were witness to the current President Mr Choue, being re-elected and also saw in the new reforms brought about by the WTF to move the organisation and sport forward.

The New Zealand Olympic Committee also recently appointed Matt to attend the inaugural first meeting of the WTF Oceania Regional Union in Sydney on the 16th July.

Up until recently New Zealand, Australia and 8 other countries in the Oceania area have come under the official WTF Asian region. The new Oceania Taekwondo Union will see all 10 countries become a new region recognized by the World Taekwondo Federation and International Olympic Committee. This means that in order to qualify for the Olympics, New Zealand will compete in the Oceania Championships rather than the Asian Games. This will make the competition tighter.
